Bodley CC 180 for no wicket!

Six games into the season and finally, last Friday, the Bodleian XI celebrate their first win. An emphatic defeat of the unwieldly named Department of Physiology/Anatomy/Genetics in the inter-department Jack Cox competition.

Having won the toss, the Bodley captain banished all thoughts of previous batting collapses, and elected to bat first. A rash decision perhaps? Particularly given past failures and with a sky ominously darkened by rain clouds. These were certainly not ideal batting conditions. Happily events were to prove that his confidence was not misplaced. Not only did Bodley score an impressive 180 off 20 overs, but they did not lose a single wicket in the process. The rules of the competition state that a batsman must retire on reaching 30 runs. Four players achieved that distinction: Ditta Yousaf, Iain Nicholson, Adrian Paterson and Leigh McKiernan. Five of our players didn't get the chance to bat at all, so successful was the top of the order. But cricket is a team game so perhaps they didn't mind too much.

In reply DPAG (as it is perhaps prudent to abbreviate) unleashed their secret weapon: a big hitting opening batsman who smashed perfectly respectable deliveries to all points of the ground, including an enormous straight drive onto the balcony of the Pharmacology building some four stories up! Luckily for us the other batsmen were less destructive. Leigh, Ditta, Ed Ball, Mike Webb and Tom Gallaher all took wickets as DPAG fell short of a winning total on 142 for 8 off 20 overs.

A good win for the Bodleian, and one that sets them up nicely for their next game on 2 July v Plant Sciences.
